Product Overview
The 5404-75-KS-2-S04-ZG is a compact stainless steel long pattern latch hook, part of the NRH 5400 series premium hardware line. Since 1996, NRH has specialized in precision case hardware, providing reliable latching solutions for flight cases, medical equipment, military boxes, firefighting cases, heavy-duty luggage, and industrial machinery. Manufactured from SUS304 stainless steel with a vibratory finishing surface, this latch offers excellent corrosion resistance, temperature tolerance, and a hygienic matte finish. As part of a complete over-center latching system, this hook must be paired with a matching strike plate, making it ideal for 20kg-rated applications in clean, humid, or food-related environments.
Working Principle and Mechanical Advantage
This latch operates on a classic lever and over-center (toggle-lock) mechanism. Mount the hook on the lid and the strike plate on the opposing case body. Pressing the hook downward slides it into the strike plate opening, generating linear clamping force. As the hook flattens flush with the base plate, the mechanism passes the over-center point, creating a self-locking state. In this position, any external vibration or shock actually tightens the latch further rather than causing it to open. This design is widely used in flight cases, precision instrument boxes, and medical carts where vibration resistance is critical. To open, simply lift the tail of the hook. The mechanism contains no springs or other wear-prone parts, relying entirely on stainless steel-to-stainless steel over-center friction for long-term reliability without rust.
Material & Finish Advantages
SUS304 Stainless Steel (Austenitic): Contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, providing excellent corrosion resistance against moisture, acids, alkalis, and high temperatures (operating range -196°C to 800°C). It is lead-free and mercury-free, suitable for food contact and medical device hygiene requirements. SUS304 also offers good stamping formability and weldability for precision latch components.
Vibratory Finishing: This process uses vibrating media to finely grind the stainless steel surface, removing burrs and oxide scale, resulting in a uniform, smooth, satin or slightly glossy finish. The vibratory finished surface resists dirt adhesion, is easy to clean and disinfect, and eliminates sharp edges that could scratch operators or case contents. This finish is particularly suitable for medical equipment, food processing devices, laboratory instruments, and premium flight cases where hygiene and appearance matter. Compared to manual mechanical polishing, vibratory finishing is more efficient and provides better surface consistency.
Installation Guidelines and Matching Strike Plate
This product is a latch hook and must be used with a matching stainless steel strike plate (sold separately). Installation steps:
- Mark three Ø4.2mm mounting hole positions on both the lid and the case body per the technical drawing.
- Drill holes using a Ø4.3mm bit. For metal cases, tap M4 threads; for wood or plastic, use self-tapping screws.
- Use SUS304 stainless steel M4 pan head or countersunk screws. Length depends on wall thickness (typically 8-10mm). Use anti-rust washers.
- Mount the hook on the lid edge and the strike plate on the corresponding case body position, ensuring the hook enters the strike plate opening centrally when closed.
- Apply medium-strength threadlocker (e.g., Loctite 243) to prevent vibration loosening, and torque to approximately 2-3 N·m.
- Test closure: You should feel a distinct "click" over-center when fully pressed. No visible gap should remain between lid and case.
Load & Durability Notes
The 5404-75-KS-2-S04-ZG is designed for 20kg static load applications. The combination of stainless steel and vibratory finishing provides a significantly longer service life in corrosive environments (humidity, salt spray, chemical disinfectants) compared to standard zinc-plated latches. When properly installed with a strike plate, the latch maintains stable locking force for extended use. It is recommended to inspect the latch every 12 months (or based on usage frequency) for proper engagement, screw tightness, and surface integrity. Replace the latch if significant wear or changed locking feel is observed. Certifications (CE, RoHS, food contact safety statements) are available upon request.
Typical Applications
Thanks to its compact 74.3mm overall length, stainless steel construction, and vibratory finish, the 5404-75-KS-2-S04-ZG is ideal for the following small to medium corrosion-resistant and hygienic latching applications:
- Flight Cases / ATA Cases: Premium stage audio, film camera equipment, drone transport cases. Stainless steel never rusts, maintaining a premium appearance.
- Medical Equipment Cases: Portable ultrasound machines, defibrillator emergency kits, mobile nursing carts, dental equipment cases. Vibratory finish is easy to wipe clean with alcohol or chlorine-based disinfectants, with no residue traps.
- Military Cases / Transit Cases: Communication equipment cases, night vision storage boxes, ammunition carrying cases. Stainless steel meets stringent salt spray and mold testing requirements.
- Firefighting Cases: Personal protective equipment cases, rescue tool storage boxes. Heat-resistant and chemical-resistant, with quick opening in harsh environments.
- Food Processing Equipment: Mobile food testing cases, portable refrigerated boxes, kitchen equipment cabinet doors. Meets food contact material safety requirements.
- Laboratory Instrument Cases: Portable analyzers, bio-safety transport boxes, reagent kits. Stainless steel surface resists acids and alkalis, easy to sterilize.
- Outdoor Power Distribution Boxes: Low-IP-rated outdoor junction boxes, solar controller enclosures. Stainless steel provides long-term weather resistance without plating peeling.
- Premium Tool Cases: Professional tool travel cases, camera equipment cases, sample display boxes. 20kg load capacity handles most transport needs, and stainless steel enhances product quality perception.
