Product Overview
The 5403-83-KS is a compact long pattern latch hook, part of the NRH 5400 series of industrial latches. Since 1996, NRH has specialized in high-end case hardware, providing reliable latching solutions for flight cases, medical equipment, military boxes, firefighting cases, heavy-duty luggage, and industrial machinery. Manufactured from premium mild steel with a yellow zinc plating finish, this latch offers good mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. As part of a complete over-center latching system, this hook must be paired with a matching strike plate to achieve a reliable 20kg locking force.
Working Principle and Mechanical Advantage
This latch operates on a classic lever and over-center (toggle-lock) mechanism. When pressed downward, the hook slides into the opposing strike plate opening while rotating around its pivot, generating linear clamping force. As the latch flattens completely flush with the base plate, the mechanism passes the over-center point and enters a self-locking state. In this position, any vibration or shock from transport or machinery actually tightens the latch further instead of causing it to open. This design is widely used in flight cases and military instrument boxes where vibration resistance is critical. To open, simply lift the tail of the latch hook upward; the hook disengages and the lid can be freely opened. The mechanism contains no springs or other wear-prone parts, relying entirely on metal-to-metal over-center friction for long-term reliability.
Material & Finish Advantages
Mild Steel: This material offers good stamping formability and structural strength, easily handling the 20kg static load without permanent deformation.
Yellow Zinc Plating: Compared to standard clear or blue-white zinc, yellow zinc plating has a thicker passivation layer (chromate conversion coating), providing enhanced corrosion resistance. This makes the 5403-83-KS suitable for high-humidity storage environments, medical carts frequently wiped with disinfectants, and short-term outdoor exposure for transit cases. Additionally, the yellow zinc surface is smooth with slight lubricity, promoting smooth engagement between the hook and strike plate. For specific corrosion resistance expectations, consult NRH technical support.
Installation Guidelines and Matching Strike Plate
This product is a latch hook and must be used with a matching strike plate (sold separately). Installation steps:
- Mark three Φ4mm mounting hole positions on both the lid and the case body according to the technical drawing.
- Drill pilot holes using a Φ4.2mm bit (self-tapping for wood/plastic; tap M4 threads for metal).
- Use M4 stainless steel pan head or countersunk screws. Length depends on wall thickness (typically 8-12mm).
- Mount the latch hook on the lid edge and the strike plate on the corresponding case body position. Ensure the hook enters the strike plate opening centrally when closed.
- Apply medium-strength threadlocker (e.g., Loctite 243) and tighten screws to appropriate torque to prevent vibration loosening.
- Test closure: When fully pressed flat, you should feel a distinct "click" as the mechanism passes over-center. The lid should close without gaps. If too tight, adjust strike plate position; if too loose, add a shim under the strike plate.
Load & Durability Notes
The 5403-83-KS is designed for 20kg static load applications. When properly installed and paired with a strike plate, the latch maintains stable locking force over extended use. It is recommended to inspect the latch every 6 months (or based on usage frequency) for proper engagement, screw tightness, and plating integrity. Replace the latch if significant wear, plating peeling, or changed locking feel is observed. Relevant certifications (CE, RoHS) are available upon request.
Typical Applications
Thanks to its compact 80mm overall length and 20kg moderate load rating, the 5403-83-KS is ideal for the following small to medium vibration-resistant latching applications:
- Flight Cases / ATA Cases: Stage audio, lighting controllers, film camera equipment, drone transport cases. Multiple latches can be evenly distributed along case edges with matching strike plates for full-perimeter locking.
- Medical Equipment Cases: Portable ultrasound machines, defibrillator emergency kits, mobile nursing cart drawer latches. Yellow zinc plating withstands daily wiping with alcohol and chlorine-based disinfectants.
- Military Cases / Transit Cases: Communication equipment cases, night vision storage boxes, ammunition carrying cases. Meets military-grade vibration and shock resistance.
- Firefighting Cases: Personal protective equipment cases, rescue tool storage boxes. Requires quick opening and reliable locking in harsh environments.
- Heavy-Duty Luggage / Tool Travel Cases: Professional tool travel cases, large camera equipment cases, sample display cases. 20kg load capacity handles most checked baggage scenarios.
- Industrial Machinery Enclosures: Small cabinet access doors, control panel covers, portable generator housings. Resists continuous low-frequency vibration in factories.
- Electronic Racks / Network Cabinets: Locking side access doors or front glass doors on 19-inch racks.
- Outdoor Power Distribution Boxes: Low-IP-rated outdoor junction boxes where yellow zinc provides short-term weather resistance.
Quality & Compliance Statement
All products are manufactured at NRH's Shanghai, China facility under ISO 9001:2015 quality management. The latch complies with RoHS 2.0 (EU 2015/863), free of lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium. CE declarations of conformity and REACH SVHC test reports are available upon request. We also support OEM/ODM custom services including laser marking (brand logo or model), special packaging (anti-rust bags, custom labels), and non-standard size modifications (minimum order quantity applies - please inquire).
