What This Corner Protector Does

Flight cases, equipment racks, and transit cases take abuse. Loading, stacking, cargo handling - the corners absorb the impact every time.

One bad hit can split the plywood, crack the edge, and compromise the entire case. Repairing a damaged corner costs more in labor and materials than buying a new corner protector.

The 7101-40-FE-CR mounts on all eight corners of a case. It takes the hit so your case doesn't have to. At 25g per piece, eight corners add only 200g to total weight - no shipping cost penalty - but the difference in case lifespan is months vs. years.

Why Spherical Beats Right-Angle

The Problem with Right-Angle Corners

When a right-angle corner hits the ground, the impact force concentrates at the two screw holes. Enough force and the screws pull through, the wood splits, the entire corner fails. Sharp edges can also cut hands and snag cargo during handling.

How the Spherical Design Fixes It

The spherical (domed) surface spreads impact force across the curved surface rather than concentrating it at a single point. The same impact that would destroy a right-angle corner might only dent a spherical one - and it keeps working.

When stacking cases, spherical surfaces create point contact, not surface contact. Less friction means easier separation. No prying, no damage.

Why Chrome Plating Matters

Not just for appearance. Shipping containers see high humidity and temperature swings. Painted corners rust after one ocean voyage. Chrome plated corners don't - and they wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Why These Specs Matter

6 Mounting Holes (Not 4)

Industry standard is 4 holes. We use 6. Two additional anchor points prevent rotation on impact and maintain clamping force under vibration. Install one and try to twist it - 4-hole corners shift; 6-hole corners don't.

1.2mm Wall Thickness

Too thin and it crumples on impact, offering no protection. Too thick and it adds unnecessary weight and cost. At 1.2mm, it's optimized for this size - strong enough to handle routine impacts without adding bulk.

44.5×44.5mm Footprint

Fits most standard flight case and equipment rack corner dimensions. Not sure if it fits? Measure your case corner width. If it matches, it fits.

Flat Corner vs. Spherical Corner

Feature Flat Corner Spherical Corner (7101-40-FE-CR)
Impact distribution Concentrated at two screws Spreads across curved surface
Screw pull-out risk High - impact tears through Low - load distributed
Wood damage Impact causes plywood splitting Minimal transfer to wood
Safety Sharp edges - cuts hands, snags cargo Smooth radius - safe
Stacking friction Surface contact - cases stick Point contact - slides freely
Corrosion resistance Paint or zinc (limited) Chrome plated (superior)

Applications

  • ATA flight cases
  • Touring equipment cases
  • Stage lighting transit cases
  • Medical equipment transport cases
  • Military transport cases
  • Industrial tool boxes
  • Instrument and meter cases

Installation Instructions

  1. Position the corner protector against the case edge. The two flanges should sit flush against both adjacent panels.
  2. Pre-drill with a 4.5mm drill bit (slightly smaller than 5.2mm to prevent wood splitting).
  3. Clear all debris and burrs from the holes.
  4. Secure with M5 rivets or self-tapping screws.

Important: Tighten firmly. Do not over-torque - excessive force can crush the plywood core.

How to Confirm You Have the Right Model

Different suppliers use different names: spherical corner protector, ball corner, round corner guard, flight case corner.

If you're unsure about the model, check these dimensions:

  • Width: 44.5mm
  • Height: 44.5mm
  • 6 mounting holes at Ø5.2mm
  • 1.2mm material thickness

Match all four - it's the same part. Not sure? Contact us with drawing number 7101-40-FE-CR - we'll confirm fit.
